Brandon J Smith

Pastor

Rev. Brandon J. Smith, a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, has been a lifelong member of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. His spiritual journey began at Little Rock AME Zion Church, where he was nurtured in the faith and served in various capacities. This foundational experience laid the groundwork for his future ministry and leadership roles.

Early Ministry and Leadership
Rev. Smith's call to ministry was affirmed in 2010, when he was appointed a Member-At-Large to the Varick International Christian Youth Council Connectional Executive Cabinet. He served as Chair of several committees, including International Restructuring, Teen Summit, Worship, and Rules, and later became Interim Parliamentarian (2012-2014). This experience not only deepened his understanding of church governance but also equipped him with the skills necessary to empower the next generation of leaders.

Education and Formation
Rev. Smith pursued higher education at Shaw University in Raleigh, NC. This academic foundation has informed his approach to ministry and leadership, enabling him to navigate the complexities of community engagement and social justice with clarity and purpose.

Ordained Ministry
Rev. Smith's ordination journey began in 2013, when he accepted his call to the preaching ministry at Little Rock AME Zion Church under the mentorship of Rev. Dr. Dwayne A. Walker. He served as Minister for Youth and Young Adults, fostering an environment of spiritual growth and discipleship among the congregation's young people. In 2021, he was ordained a Deacon by the Right Rev. George E. Battle Jr. and assigned to pastor Greater Walls Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Rockingham, NC. The following year, he was ordained an Elder by the Right Rev. Darryl B. Starnes, marking a significant milestone in his ministerial journey.

Pastoral Ministry and Leadership
Rev. Smith has served as pastor of several churches, including Greater Walls Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church (2021-2022), Lee Thee A.M.E. Zion Church (2022-2025). During his tenure at Lee Thee A.M.E. Zion Church, he successfully grew the ministry in both membership and financial stewardship, demonstrating his ability to lead and vision cast effectively. He is now the proud Pastor of the China Grove A.M.E. Zion Church in Pineville, NC after being assigned by Bishop Starnes in June of 2025.

Connectional and Ecumenical Leadership
In addition to his pastoral roles, Rev. Smith has served in various connectional and ecumenical capacities, including Executive President of the Varick International Christian Youth Council (2014-2018) and Director of Communication and Technology for the Piedmont Episcopal District. He is also a member of the World Methodist Council Youth and Young Adult Consultation Board, the World Council of Churches Global Youth and Young Adult Initiative Program, and the National Council of Churches Inter-Generational Think Tank, among others. These roles have not only broadened his perspective on the global church but also deepened his commitment to social justice and ecumenical cooperation.

Throughout his ministry, Rev. Smith has remained steadfast in his dedication to empowering young people, fostering spiritual growth, and advancing the mission of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. His journey is a testament to the power of faith, leadership, and community, inspiring others to embrace their calling with passion and purpose.
